Covid-19 Vaccine

CORONAVIRUS VACCINATION UPDATE 15.12.2020

Please visit our website www.hedmed.co.uk for updated information

Our GP colleagues and their teams in Primary Care are beginning vaccination across mid and south Essex. A small number of sites received their vaccine allocation and went live on Tuesday 15 December 2020 with more locations following in the coming weeks. Wait to be contacted.

The five local sites launching this week are:

  • Puzey Family Practice, Rochford
  • Beacon Health Group, Danbury Medical Centre
  • Highlands Surgery, Leigh-on-Sea
  • Stifford Clays Health Centre, Grays
  • The Brentwood Centre, Brentwood

We are not in the first 220 Practices getting supplies and are likely to have our first doses in January 2020

Nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and other NHS staff will work alongside GPs.  They will also be targeting the same cohort of people who are the most vulnerable patients and considered at highest risk, people aged 80 and over and care home workers. As before the NHS will contact those currently eligible and invite them to attend an appointment – please don’t contact your GP in advance of this.

People receive two doses of the Pfizer vaccine by injection into their upper arm, at least 21 days apart. It is a complex logistical challenge as the vaccine needs to be stored at -70C before being thawed and can only be moved a very small number of times.

Our hospital vaccination hubs in Basildon University Hospital and our neighbours at Colchester Hospital have now received further deliveries of the PfizerBioNTech vaccine and will enter their second week vaccinating people considered the most at risk of the virus – those aged 80 and over, care home staff and health care workers.

Both hospital vaccination hubs are operating seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. They are offering the vaccine initially to those already attending the hospital as an outpatient and patients being discharged home after a hospital stay. All available appointments at Basildon University Hospital are now filled until 21 December, more people with be contacted when new appointment slots become available in the next few weeks.

Larger scale vaccination centres treating large numbers of patients at a range of venues including sports halls and venues, conference centres and NHS sites are also preparing to stand up later in the month when further supplies of the vaccine are available.

For those who are unable to get to Basildon, we have a waiting list open and when vaccines become available to our Local Primary Care Network, we will contact patients.

Our Primary Care Network consists of Hedingham Medical Centre, Freshwell Health Centre, Elizabeth Courtauld Surgery, Pump House Surgery, Coggeshall Surgery and Kelvedon and Feering Health Centre.

It is likely that we will be carrying out vaccinations at our designated site at the Pump House Surgery, Earls Colne.

For the whole programme the key messages are as follows:

  • This is a phased vaccination programme which will expand over the coming months
  • The NHS will be in contact with people when it is their turn to have the vaccine
  • When someone is called for an appointment, please can they make sure they attend; and
  • In the meantime, continue to abide by all the social distancing and hand hygiene guidance.
